Penang Bon Odori 2011

MPPP Building

Penang Bon Odori was held on 16 July 2011 at The Esplanade next to Fort Cornwallis. It was a grand event and if I am not mistaken, Penang Bon Odori received an overwhelming response from Malaysians, Japanese and as well as foreign tourists. Most of the feedback for this event were rather positive. Another successful and great event in Penang. Bon Odori is just like Hungry Ghost festival in Malaysia but it is an event to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. Bon Odori is a kind of dance. This event attracted a lot of Japanese to Penang just to celebrate this event. Besides exploring the culture of the Japanese, you can try a lot of Japanese and local food. For those who missed out this year Bon Odori, make sure you mark your calendar and visit Bon Odori next year!

George Town World Heritage Day 2010 (George Town Festival)

Georgetown Festival 2010

Yes! Once again, Penang has it all! George Town Festival, the greatest event for George Town to mark the day it was crowned the World Heritage Site by UNESCO. This festival is held every year in the month of July. And the best is 7 July is declared a public holiday as Heritage Day for Penangites! Last year, 2010, was the first year George Town Festival was held and on top of that, it was amazing, fabulous, rich in culture and absolutely one of the most successful events in Penang! Alright, I am not Penangite but I admit it was the best among all events in Penang. Why? During the month of July, it is the time Penang shines to the world of how great this small island is. You can feel the hospitality of Penang, richness in culture, peaceful city, different races, different cultures, different people, live under one roof with harmony as the principle of life! Without saying much, this year, 2011, July, once again, Penang is making another step in history, the new faces of George Town Festival 2011. The list of events is too long for me to say here.

Straits Quay, Penang

Straits Quay, Penang

Now, the next post is regarding Penang's First Seafront Retail Marina, the magnificent Straits Quay. When I first heard of it, I pronounced it as Straits "Kue" but the actual pronunciation is Straits "Key". Sorry for my poor English. This was the first time I set my foot on Straits Quay but definitely not the first time heard of it. Because it was opened, I joined the games in its Facebook (Straits Quay), I won myself a RM50 Cash Voucher from Four Season Bakery in Straits Quay. It is a big place with extraordinary design, either interior or exterior. According to my friend's observation, it is targeting a certain group of people with special interest basically because it is not like a normal shopping complex with lots of brand and variation. I am sure the design is fantastic which favours the design from the West. It has its own class and is wonderful.

Gary Cao 【曹格】 LIVE at Gurney Plaza, Penang

Gary 曹格
Alright! Here comes Gary Cao LIVE at Gurney Plaza, Penang yesterday, 17 June 2011 at 8PM, at the new wing. Actually I have a lot of posts to write but I chose to blog this first because I simply think Gary is awesome. He is from Malaysia and he is very friendly and humble. He is not arrogant but get very close to fans. He sang, danced, played games, shake hand with fans and even allowed fans to take personal pictures with him for those having his album. Normally, no personal picture is allowed due to time constraint but since he is Gary 曹格 as said by him, there will be photo session with fans personally! He even said that he treated Gurney Plaza as Bukit Jalil and kneel down while singing. At the end of this post, I uploaded the video of him singing 背叛 and kneel down.

甜在心糖水屋 (Sweet-i)

Sweet-i has moved to new location!
Please scroll to the end of this post to see their new location.
Sweet-i

糖水 or dessert is famous among Chinese, especially here in Penang. Last two nights, I went to this particular shop/house of desserts, Sweet-i, The Sweet Temptations Shop House. They served a lot of desserts or 糖水. This shop is actually a house renovated to be a shop selling desserts. They have a lot of products but not all are available everyday. Each day, they served different desserts. I tried out Sha Shen Red Dates Winter Melon Soup which is good to get rid of heatiness. My friend had Green Bean China Barley Soup. Good thing is that the desserts are not very sweet. They taste so nice and healthy as well. The boss is very friendly as he will introduce you all the desserts as you asked. If you don't know, just ask and he is very friendly to help.

UPDATE: Video included!

Linda

Yes, Linda Chung from Hong Kong! She is now better known as Miss Cool in Yes Sir No Sir (点解阿Sir是阿Sir) TVB drama. She was here on 28 May 2011 at Penang Auto-City. She was here to promote her album, The Private Selection. That was the first time I saw her in LIVE! She is very pretty, cute and FRIENDLY! Although that was just a small concert, she is very friendly to all! According to my friend, she is friendlier than the other Taiwan artist that came here last year in Auto-City.

Goh Thew Chik Hainan Chicken Rice (伍秀澤海南鸡饭)

One line to display the coffee shop name in both language, "Kedai Kopi Thew Chik Cafe"

When Penang is going green recently, even, naming the coffee shop is not an exception, going for both Malay and English languages in one line, "Kedai Kopi Thew Chik Cafe". In Malay language should be "Kedai Kopi Thew Chik" and in English, should be "Thew Chik Cafe". When both were combined, it became - Kedai Kopi Thew Chik Cafe. However, Penang is still the Paradise of Food! This post I am going to introduce the chicken rice in Penang. This going green shop is selling Hainan Chicken Rice, which is situated along Lebuh Chulia, Penang.

Joez Penang Coconut Jelly

Joez Penang Coconut Jelly

After lunch at Chit Tiau Lor Wetmarket, now I went to Joez Penang Coconut Jelly to have the famous coconut jelly. Not the jelly with coconut flavour, but the jelly from the coconut water. Weird thing is, they do not have to remove the coconut water to make the jelly, the jelly is produced inside the coconut itself without having to open the coconut. For me, the taste is a bit weird but worth to try.

Wetmarket at Lebuh McNair (Chit Tiau Lor Wetmarket)

Warning! Sorry, this is a NON-HALAL post!

On the table at one of the stalls at the wetmarket

This time, I am at the wetmarket near Lebuh McNair, the Seven Streets Precinct of George Town, Penang, or known to the local as "Chit Tiau Lor" in Hokkien. This wetmarket has two sides; one selling vegetables, raw meats and etc and the other side is selling food, like a food court. One thing is that some of the stalls in the market do not allow you to order drinks from other stalls, which in the end, you will see the notice on the table, NOT ALLOWED ICE-KACANG. Under the word NOT is...

When Google Translator fails

See the last line of the hanging menu

Do you think you can depend on software solely to do everything for you? You're wrong! Here is another failure of Google Translator. I found the menu at one of the coffee shops in Taman Universiti, Skudai, Johor.

If you notice, actually the Chinese version is wrong too. Let's see what Google Translator did for us when we have the correct Chinese version.

Sorry, my post isn't really related to the title, just that, I found it printed on a bag and it seems an interesting phrase. Alright! First supper when I was in Penang since 21 May 2011. Riding on the Highway

Riding on the Highway

Yesterday, 21 May 2011, marked the day, the next chapter of my life. 4 years of university finally no longer a comma but a full-stop. Yesterday was the day I move to Penang to work. Riding on the PLUS highway, I have these feeling of happiness and worry. I am happy because finally, I am in the semi-graduate mode and worry because, is the chapter of life is a smooth one? An interesting one? Or disaster?

Verbena Cake & Bread Shop

Verbena Cake & Bread Shop

This is a story of a bakery that made its name in Kulai. Kulai, a small town with a lot of delicious food, zoo and cake and bread shop is not an exceptional. Verbena, according to my friend from Kulai, the chef is the ex-chef from Shangri-la Hotel, Singapore. I am not sure if this is true, but I am sure the pastries, cakes and breads here are VERY delicious! Let's say the chef is not from Shangri-la but for me, it has the Shangri-la standard. The first time I went there, the shop was almost full. The reason is you can buy Shangri-la style pastries at the price of normal pastries.

Saleng Zoo, Kulai

Saleng Zoo

Now, it's time for the travel post instead of food! The second, we went to Saleng Zoo, a private zoo located at Saleng, near to Kulai. From what I know, this zoo was opened by a businessman. It is a private zoo, so, you will expect less animals compared to National Zoo or even Johor Zoo. However, you can see a lot of tigers and lions here! The number of tigers and lions here is more than other zoos. I am not sure how the management is going to survive by feeding the tigers and lions everyday. The entrance fee is RM15.00 for adult and RM8.00 for child. The opening hour is from 9.30AM until 7.00PM. The entrance fee is a bit high but considering the cost they need to operate this zoo, I think it's worth the price as they have a lot tigers and lions. However, the aunty at the ticket selling counter is good enough to give a discount, FREE one head charge. We went in a group of 9 but she said pay for 8 people since we asked if there is any student price.

Chicken Rice Nasi Lemak

I went to Kulai, Johor with a bunch of coursemates last Friday, 13 May (Friday, The 13th). That was the first and the last Kulai trip before I leave UTM. The first stop at Kulai was eating dinner at one of the famous Nasi Lemak stalls. Nasi lemak is one of the Malaysia's pride and this cuisine is only available in Malaysia, if I am not mistaken. A typical nasi lemak consists of white rice cooked with santan (coconut milk), sambal, peanut and egg. It is Malaysians' most favourite breakfast and is widely available throughout Malaysia. The best part of Nasi Lemak is the rice and the sambal. Since it is widely available, the rice and sambal are the only criteria to distinguish between delicious or not delicious. But the picture shown above looks like chicken rice, rather than Nasi Lemak, but trust me, it's Nasi Lemak! The one that I went to in Kulai is famous for its sambal, I presumed. I saw a lot people "refilled" the sambal. The sambal is a bit spicy but nice.

Suck it, Brand X

This is what happen when competition gets stiff. I came across an advertisement in the Facebook. It is quite interesting when you see the picture.

Suck it, Brand X
I am not sure it is typing error or an unofficial advertisement, but when I clicked the link, it redirected me to Altera official website. I am not sure but from the image, I saw "Suck it, Brand X".

Do you think that it is too extreme for Altera to advertise its new design software with "Suck it, Brand X"? Now, you know why Quartus II Software is #1 in Performance and Productivity. And WHAT IS BRAND X? I guess it's Xilinx.

What do you see? Please tell me in the comment box!

UPDATE: After 5 minutes I posted this, this is the new Altera advertisement in Facebook.

Ayukawa Japanese Buffet Restaurant

Ayukawa
These few years, Japanese food outlets grew like mushroom after the rain. I realized most of the Malaysians like to eat Japanese cuisines. However, due to the Japan nuclear plant explosion recently, the Japanese cuisines business is going down because everyone is afraid to consume radioactive. Today, a group of friends and I went to Ayukawa Japanese Buffet Restaurant at Taman Sutera Utama, Skudai, Johor to have a lunch buffet. It is situated next to Sutera Mall. The ordering style is ala-carte or "Table Clipping", which means you order from the menu given but order as much as you can at a fixed price. Since the price for lunch buffet is cheaper than dinner buffet, a few dishes were taken off from the menu, the expensive one. However, you still can have a taste of sashimi, the fresh raw fish. There are three types of fish served as sashimi - tuna, salmon and butter fish, if I am not mistaken.

Chinese New Year Gathering @ Modern Revelation Yakiniku

Wow! Today (17 Feb 2011) is the last day to celebrate Chinese New Year 2011! Before that, once again, Happy Chinese New Year! I think it is time for me to post about my course's CNY gathering because the last day of the CNY! This gathering was held last week (11 Feb 2011) but I have no time to update about it. The gathering was held at 现代启示录, Taman Pelangi (aka Modern Revelation Yakiniku (Facebook)). For the location, please refer to the end of this post. This gathering was supposed to be held before CNY but some of them were packed on their schedules. For my comment on this restaurant, it is nice and a must-try BUT it is a bit pricey! I am not sure whether I can reveal the prices of the F&B on my post but what I can say is make sure you bring enough cash or make sure your credit card is "usable". Besides, I did not post the pictures of my coursemates because I am not sure whether they want to appear here or not OR I might end up being sued for "copyright" their faces! Hahaha! Jk Jk! Here are some pictures regarding the restaurant:

Redbox and Steambot

Today is a hell of a busy day! Not busy of studies but busy of outing. My friend and I went to RedBox Pelangi to sing karaoke. We arrived at around 2.30pm. Everything was fine then until we got bored singing because it is just the two of us. Around 6.30pm, we planned to pay the bill and headed for Sutera Mall because I want to get myself a Fipper. When we were about to leave the room, my friend realized that he lost his car key. We searched the whole room but we could not find the key. The waiter even offered to move out the sofa for us to search the key. However, my friend thought it is not necessary as I am on my way to his car to check whether he left his key in his car. When I was on my way, I kept on thinking that everything will be fine! The first thing I checked once I walked out the lift was to see whether my friend's car is still in the parking lot! Thanks God that his car was still in the parking lot. Once I walked closer to his car, I found that his car key was dangling outside his car on the boot. Yes, the key was on his car's boot all the time for 4 hours! I thought to myself, are we lucky or the safety in Johor has improved? I called my friend and he came down. It was kinda exciting and afraid because if his car is lost, it is a big problem! Then, we headed for Sutera Mall but on the way, I suggested to have steambot. Then, we went for steambot and could not make it for Sutera Mall. I reached my room at around 10.30pm.

Lesson of the Day: Please check your car key once you are about to leave the parking lot.

I learned that I have being a bad friend recently! I am influencing my friend as he is planning on having a good healthy diet to keep fit. I am sorry that you had your difficult day. I will not influence you anymore because you are now free to pursue your dream. Should I say: Congratulation, you are now free to go as planned!?

Thean Hou Gong (天后宫)

During the first day Chinese New Year, my sister and I drove to Thean Hou Gong (天后宫), one of the famous temples in Kuala Lumpur. It took us around 30 - 40 minutes to arrive at there by car from Bukit Bintang area because there was a traffic jam at Chow Kit Road. This temple is located near the Mid Valley. There is a website for this temple: Thean Hou Gong

My Ride

There is not much time when I travel with bus. I took bus from JB to KL for CNY. There is nothing much to say about the journey from JB to KL, except thanking my friend, Jun Kit for fetching me to Sri Putri. However, story is kinda exciting for my journey back to JB from KL. First of all, there is a big WOW when I arrived at Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS), the new bus terminal at KL. It is big and nice, just like an airport where you have check-in counters, departure hall and arrival hall. There are 11 gates in the departure halls. You have to wait for your bus at the right gate. Before that, you have to get your "boarding pass" before you can enter the departure hall as there are policemen checking your pass before you can enter, similar to airport custom except the x-ray machine.

Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS)

Lobby

Departure Hall

Departure Gate

I can say it is nice and cool! It's just a bus terminal! Somehow you need a boarding pass to "board" your bus. Oh ya, you need your IC to check in.

Boarding Pass

Then, the journey from KL to Yong Peng (rest stop) is as usual. However, I saw something right in front of me during the journey from Yong Peng back to Larkin. I saw he she kissed her in the bus. I saw two girls kissing in the bus, dating and etc! Hahaha! And there is a Malay girl sitting behind them and her face was like (-_-)!!!

When I arrived at Larkin, just because I don't want to get cheated since it was my first time in Larkin, I walked to the back to find taxi booth to get the taxi coupon. Somehow, I met a Chinese man. He offered a ride for RM40.00 from Larkin to UTM. I got on the taxi and he made a few phone calls. Then, he asked, you are not in hurry, right? I have to fetch my wife. I was like sweating! I can do nothing since I already paid and sat in the taxi. He drove to places I don't even know. He told me a lot of things including some cold jokes such as, "You from Sarawak Kuching? Is a place name Anjing? Since there is Kuching, why there is no anjing?" and "There is a place in Indonesia called Surabaya (Sudah bayar) and there is a place called Belum Bayar". I was like running out of breath! I was scared as he said left to me is the jail then suddenly the court. He even asked me whether I am familiar with the area and he took me to "makan angin" for free! WTH! In the end, he was fetching his wife who is working in Singapore. I arrived safely at room finally! Thanks!

A few reminders for those who take taxi:

1. Ask for price before getting into a taxi.
2. Jot down the taxi plate number and the taxi driver name (display in front of the dashboard)
3. Call your parents right in front of the taxi driver and make it like as if your parent is asking for the taxi plate number and tell them the number.
4. Be alert of your surrounding.
5. Tell your parents your estimated time of arrival to your destination and have them call you if you do not call back by that time.
6. If no one is answering, try make a police report with the taxi plate number and the taxi driver's name.

These are something I learned when you travel alone in a taxi! Be extra careful because you might not be lucky every time!

"Homecoming" is a "Great Day"

Homecoming is a Great Day for all! I believe those who study aboard or work outside, Chinese New Year is the homecoming day and it is the greatest day of all times because you get to meet with your father, mother, sisters, brothers, uncles, aunties, cousins and etc! Now, "Homecoming" is put into a film. I watched this movie in Wangsa Walk TGV @ KL. It is a nice and funny movie. The theme of this movie is going home for reunion dinner but on the way, there was a lot of problems but finally, managed to arrive to have the reunion dinners with the loved ones. It is funny and it is worth to watch.

Then, today, I went to watch Great Day in Tebrau TGV @ Johor. It is a nice movie also. The theme of this movie is respecting and love the elders. No matter how busy you are, try to spend sometimes with your parents and children. Do not meet them only during Chinese New Year. If you father is 70 years old now, and human can live up to 80 years old, it means you can only meet your father 10 times only. Below is the OST from Great Day which I think is nice. Please enjoy! The MV can act as the trailer too. You can watch some parts of the movie in this MV.

I did not manage to snap the picture of the ticket stub for Great Day because I used it to redeem Great Day red packet. Just the ticket stub from any cinemas for Great Day and redeem it at any Eu Yan Sang branches in Malaysia. Inside the red packet, there is a RM5 Eu Yan Sang voucher. Be fast it runs out of stock!

when birthday is in the air

Birthday! When I was in KL Genting Highlands recently, there was a Branded Sales going on. I went there for shopping for Chinese New Year cloths. Out of sudden, I think of getting a present for my friend for his birthday. I was like went in and out for 2 days but did not manage to get anything for present except a collar T-shirt for myself. Alright, this post isn't regarding me. So, I went to First World Plaza, 1-Utama, Sungei Wang, Wangsa Maju Jusco and Carrefour to look for present. However, I still did not manage to get anything. Somehow, during my last night stay in KL, I went to Berjaya Times Square. There, I managed to get him a Hang Ten T-shirt. Since he is "choosy", I bought two shirts with different colours, blue and pink. His "shirt requirement" are : blue colour, no stripe, no big fancy patterns, even if stripe, must be as small as possible and etc! To be safe, I bought 2 shirts. I am not sure whether he likes it or not. *I forgot to take the picture of the shirts*

When I back to Johor, I went to Hinode to buy the boxes, present paper and wishing card. Then, I did a little magic and ....

There are 2 presents but he is going choose 1 only due to budget limitation! Hahaha! So, the other one will be mine. Anyway, Happy Birthday! I hope you will like it! It is not expensive, it is not nice but it is sincerely from me!
