House of Kolomee @ D'Piazza Mall, Bayan Baru, Penang

Today, I am going to share something, not originated from Penang. If you follow my blog, you will notice most of the food are from Penang. Although I am from Sarawak, but I work in Penang and I seldom post something about my hometown. Good news to those Sarawakians who work in Penang but miss the hometown dishes. One of the Sarawakians who works in Penang, started this shop, selling the Sarawak kolo mee. Kolo Mee is a famous dish particularly in Kuching, Sarawak, while in Sibu, Sarawak, the famous dish is Kampua. A bit introduction about Kolo Mee. Kolo Mee is something quite similar with Penang Wantan Mee, but the noodle used is different as well as the topping ingredients. Kolo Mee's noodle is more curly, which if I am not mistaken, it is due to the egg.

From the picture above, Kolo Mee comes with minced pork, spring onion, fried onion, braised pork (sometimes they use char siew pork) and vegetable. Now, from the experience of a Sarawakian, the secret recipe in making a nice Kolo Mee beside having a good quality noodle, they use pork oil and the water that cooks the noodle. Start with pork oil, the reason they use pork oil is because the taste is better, than using vegetable oil. I tried once using vegetable oil and the taste is totally different. The way we "cook" the noodle is by putting inside the boiling water, since the noodle is made from flour, "cook" them in water will make the water sticky. To make a tasty Kolo Mee, one must change the water, reboil them, regularly after making certain number of plates of Kolo Mee. Else, the Kolo Mee will be sticky. :)

Sarawak Wantan

Besides that, if you try out Penang Wantan Mee, the noodle comes with wantan as well. Wantan is actually minced pork wrapped in Wantan Skin. The Wantan Skin is a dough skin made of flour, egg, water and salt. In Sarawak, we sell Wantan separately instead of mixing them together with noodle. But upon request, they can mix Wantan and Kolo Mee together, but they are going to take away the braised pork. This is in Sarawak. But here, at House of Kolomee, I don't think we can "customize" the menu as everything is "pre-defined" earlier. Other than that, they do have a variety of Kolo Mee to try, different "flavor" and they are trying to have more menu.

If you ask me, I had been eating Kolo Mee long time ago when I was still in Sarawak. The taste of Kolo Mee sold in House of Kolomee is quite authentic. I was told the all the ingredients are taken from Sarawak, including the noodle. So, you recollect all your nice memories of eating Kolo Mee in Sarawak at House of Kolomee. Recently, House of Kolomee is selling the raw noodle as well. I copied the brochure from their Facebook page as in below.
