888 Hokkien Mee, Presgrave Street, Penang

A lot of people cannot really differentiate between "Hokkien Mee" and "Prawn Mee". In Penang, Hokkien Mee is also known as Prawn Mee. When you order Prawn Mee, you are actually ordering Hokkien Mee, as it is the same dish with different names only. But in Kuala Lumpur (KL), Hokkien Mee is Tai Lok Mee, a kind of fried mee with the mee is fatter than the ordinary yellow mee. In KL, Prawn Mee is basically Penang Prawn Mee. So, Penang Hokkien Mee and KL Hokkien Mee are totally different. Prawn Mee in Sarawak is fried mee with prawn. See the differences below.

Penang Hokkien Mee with Pork Knuckle
Penang Hokkien Mee with Pork Knuckle (888 Hokkien Mee)
Since I am in Penang, obviously I am blogging out about Penang Hokkien Mee. Yesterday I went to 888 Hokkien Mee at Presgrave Street. The stall was packed with customers that even ordering was difficult. The Penang Hokkien Mee with pork knuckle above is the one sold at 888 Hokkien Mee at Presgrave Road. It is one of the best Hokkien Mee in Penang. Besides pork knuckle, you can add roasted pork, fishball, pig intestine and many more. Adding extra ingredients subject to extra charges. For the mee, the one in the picture is "Maggi" noodle but you can choose either yellow noodle, mee hoon (rice vermicelli) or mixture of yellow noodle and mee hoon. The "default" one is yellow noodle mix with mee hoon.
Loh Mee with Roasted Pork
Loh Mee with Roasted Pork (888 Loh Mee)
Beside selling Hokkien Mee, they sell Loh Mee too. In Penang, the stall that sells Hokkien Mee, will sell Loh Mee too because there is a dish called Hokkien Loh (Hokkien Mee's soup + Loh Mee's soup). It is like Hokkien Mee marries with Loh Mee.
Ais Kacang
Ais Kacang
A bowl of 888 Hokkien Mee is never complete with a bowl of ais kacang too. If you follow my blog, I posted earlier about the New World Park Ais Kacang, this ais kacang is more like the original ais kacang but the one in New World Park is a fruit ais kacang. So, you will find that they look different. This ais kacang is nice as the syrup is so fragrant that when I walked pass through the stall, I can smell it.
If you are curious why the stall is called 888, in Cantonese, the pronunciation of "8" sounds like Fatt which means prosperous. So, 888 literally means triple prosperous.
Venue: 888 Hokkien Mee, Presgrave Street, Penang
(They have a branch at Bayan Baru, Penang)
Price:
Hokkien Mee with Pork Knuckle : RM5.80 (Medium)
Loh Mee with Roasted Pork : RM5.80 (Medium)
Ais Kacang with extra one scoop of ice cream : RM3.30

Pandan Coconut, Abu Siti Lane, Penang

Actually I am in a bad mood now. Anyway, I am still writing this. Coconut drink, I bet most of you know what is that. A natural drink to cool off the heatiness of your body and yes, I had it every time I feel I am burning from the inside out. However, not the best time to have it now because my heart is so cold now.
Coconut
Pandan Coconut
Coconut into half
After you drink the refreshing "coconut juice", cut it into half for the flesh
Coconut Spoon
Now is the best part, you do not need a spoon but they will "make" a coconut spoon for you, go green I guess.
Alright, this is not a normal coconut, but it has Pandan flavour in it. I guess they plant the Pandan leaves near the coconut tree.
Venue: Abu Siti Lane, Penang (Go till the end of the road and you will see the shop)
Price: RM3.00 for Pandan Coconut (add another RM0.20 for the cold one)

YEA Japanese BBQ and Shabu Shabu, Penang

Hello! Let's start my page with something tempting and tasty. I went to YEA Japanese BBQ and Shabu Shabu at Penang Times Square, Penang. It is a place where you can truly reveal your cooking skill where about 95% of the food requires your own cooking. But don't worry, if you are a bad cook, there is another 5% for you to try for. The interesting part is that they are marble to cook the dishes. I guess it is the first in Malaysia.
Salmon
Salmon cooked with special sauce (I dont know the name of the sauce)
See the marble? Don't worry, it won't crack because I had tested it. Don't overcooked the salmon else it will taste not so nice.
Oyster
Steamed oyster (Still raw, steam them yourself)
The oysters are mixed with special sauce (again!) which I don't know the name of the sauce. Arrange them nicely on the marble, cover them with the "steambot pot cover" and wait for about 3-4 minutes and you will realize the size of the oysters shrink but definitely not the taste.
Scallop
Raw Scallop, really a big one!
Since they are so huge, I don't really dare to eat but I bet the taste is so damn finger-licking!
Lean Pork
Lean Pork, mixed with Salt & Pepper and a little bit of Chili Flakes
This is nice, juicy meat if you do not overcook them.
Lean Pork (After cook)
Sorry as my hand was shaking
Pork Bacon surrounding the Snapper fish
The pork bacon is nice but I used the wrong sauce to cook the Snapper
My friend said the way I cooked them made people don't want to eat them.
Seafood on the left and Stingray on the right
They were once lived together but now they met again.
The seafood tasted like assam and the Stingray tasted like Penang Laksa.
The unwrapped seafood
Alright! I forgot to take the picture of the Stingray.
The ice-cream
King's Ice Cream
I had lots of food actually but I was too busy eating that I didn't snap all the pictures. This was the second time I visited this place and still, it does not disappoint me! So, give it a try, buffet-style.
Name: YEA Japanese BBQ and Shabu Shabu

Italiannies at Gurney Paragon, Penang

Buon Giorno! (Good day in Italian) I don't speak Italian but I had Italian cuisines today at Italiannies at Gurney Paragon, Penang.
Italiannies
I had this Italian bread with sauces as appetizer (complimentary from Italiannies), mushroom soup, pasta, pizza and Tiramisu cake as dessert. The service is good as before we step closer to the shop, they already opened the door wide to welcome us. By the time I sat down, the waiter introduced us the sauces which I can't remember the name and the complimentary breads.
Italian breads, the one with black dot tastes nice! Not a wheat but is nice
These sauces are used to dip the breads.
I don't know what are those but nice for dipping the bread
The black one tasted like vinegar and the other one tasted like olive oil but I am not sure what are those actually
Thanks to Ling for sharing the info and experience. The black sauce is Balsamic Vinegar and the other one is Olive oil infused with herbs.
All these are complimentary from Italiannies. Any Italians here? Mind to share with us what are those? Or maybe if anyone has any idea what are those, please feel free to share with us. :)
Then, the mushroom soup. It is creamy and tasted real nice!
Mushroom soup
We ordered mushroom soup and the waiter is good enough to ask if we meant to share it. He recommended us the regular one and he helped us to serve in 2 bowls because it is more worth. The price for the regular is RM14.90 and the size for small one is RM9.90.
The pizza is really a killer! It is huge! And the taste is superb! But with superb, I mean the taste is so authentic as if you are dining in Italy (my own personal opinion). Because normally the local pizza, you will find it to be over-taste, extra cheese, extra this and that just to "boost" the taste. This pizza, fair taste, and not over-boost the taste. You will feel it tasted so-so but at least I feel the real taste of pizza should be the one like this.
Ham and Mushroom Pizza. Full of toppings and nice.
Then, the pasta! Again, we ordered a regular one and it is good for two persons. This pasta is cooked with wines, so you will taste a bit of wine when you eat it.
Again, can't remember the name as it is in Italian
Finally, the cake! Tiramisu cake! But we need to take away the cake as we are too full! So it looked a bit awkward as the cake followed us shopping before we headed home.
Nicely packed in the container
It looked awkward because it was taken away in a container and we shop for 2 hours before heading home
The original presentation of the cake should be nicer if you have them in the restaurant. :)
This was the first time I ate at Italiannies and before this, a lot people told me it is expensive. Comparing with some other shops serving the same thing, yes, it might be. But the food portion is definitely different. In normal shop, regular is good for one adult. But here, regular is good for 2 adults, if you are not a big eater. So, I would say, give it a try and order wisely because you might be surprised by the food portion.
Eat Well Live Long - Good one from Italiannies

Mushroom soup - RM14.90
Pizza - RM37.90
Paste - RM34.90

Penang Bon Odori 2011

MPPP Building

Penang Bon Odori was held on 16 July 2011 at The Esplanade next to Fort Cornwallis. It was a grand event and if I am not mistaken, Penang Bon Odori received an overwhelming response from Malaysians, Japanese and as well as foreign tourists. Most of the feedback for this event were rather positive. Another successful and great event in Penang. Bon Odori is just like Hungry Ghost festival in Malaysia but it is an event to honor the spirits of one's ancestors. Bon Odori is a kind of dance. This event attracted a lot of Japanese to Penang just to celebrate this event. Besides exploring the culture of the Japanese, you can try a lot of Japanese and local food. For those who missed out this year Bon Odori, make sure you mark your calendar and visit Bon Odori next year!
